With the growing array of terms used to describe different aspects of healthcare, such as integrative, functional, holistic, alternative, and preventive medicine, amongst many more, it can be challenging to grasp their distinctions. Consequently, it's common for people to lump several of these terms together.
Colleagues at the British Society of Lifestyle Medicine (BSLM) have prepared several documents to help solidify the understanding of what Lifestyle Medicine really is, and what it is not. They were so kind to share the following tables with us, which we believe will shed light on the questions that we often get, by displaying their distinctions.
This is not to say that one is better than the other, or that they cannot co-exist. Many professionals, clinics, and institutions might make use of different modalities of medicine and practices. Our goal is to educate, guide, and be transparent. We advise professionals to inform their patients, students, and clients of their specialties and clarify whenever they are making use of each approach.
