Presentation 1: Type 2 Diabetes Remission in Singapore: Evidence from the NHG Health Diabetes Remission Trial

Type 2 diabetes is a significant public health challenge in Singapore, with up to one million people projected to be living with the condition by 2050. There is growing evidence that Type 2 diabetes remission is an achievable goal for selected individuals, particularly those with early-onset diabetes and obesity. This talk will review the international evidence supporting diabetes remission and present findings from the NHG Health Diabetes Remission Clinical Trial, a randomised controlled trial conducted in Singapore and funded by the NHG Health Fund and the Tanoto Foundation. The session will also discuss implementation challenges in primary care and the importance of raising physician awareness of diabetes remission.

Speaker: Dr Tang Wern Ee

Family Physician, Senior Consultant, and Director of the Clinical Research Unit & Information Management and Analytics at National Healthcare Group Polyclinics (NHGP) A/Prof Tang Wern Ee  is a Senior Consultant Family Physician at the National Healthcare Group Polyclinics, where she serves as Director of the Clinical Research Unit and Director of Information Management and Analytics. With research interests spanning chronic disease management, health literacy, and primary care health services, she leads the NHG Reversing Diabetes Research Programme and is the principal investigator of a primary care Diabetes Remission Clinical Trial, funded by the NHG Health Fund and the Tanoto Foundation. She is actively involved in developing practical, evidence-based approaches to Type 2 diabetes remission in community settings.

Presentation 2: Lifestyle Medicine for Remission of Diabetes Diabetes is a global crisis: 589 million people currently live with it, projected to reach 853 million by 2050, with roughly half of all cases undiagnosed. This session traces how the field's goals have shifted, from managing blood glucose to pursuing remission as a primary treatment outcome, and reviews the evidence that intensive lifestyle intervention can achieve remission without surgery or medication. Dr Poobalasingam draws on his work leading the WHO-Ministry of Health Malaysia Lifestyle Medicine for Diabetes Remission Project, the first public primary healthcare implementation of its kind, to make the case for embedding lifestyle medicine into primary care systems more broadly. This project was implemented at a public primary healthcare facility in Negeri Sembilan in collaboration with Malaysia's Ministry of Health. He developed the clinical module, trained the healthcare professionals involved, and helped position Malaysia as possibly the first country to implement lifestyle medicine within a public primary healthcare facility, a project that led to the establishment of a dedicated Lifestyle Medicine clinic there.
